About us
The Centre for Air pollution, energy and health Research (CAR) is the only group of its kind in Australia to bring together researchers focusing on the impacts of air pollution and new forms of energy on our health.
Established in 2017, CAR is an NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) and is an extension of the previous Centre for Air quality and health Research and evaluation (also named CAR).

CAR brings together more than 30 researchers from around Australia and internationally in diverse but related disciplines who are at the forefront of their scientific fields. We are based in eight of Australia's most prestigious research institutions.

As a CRE, CAR does not direct research projects but instead supports teams of researchers to pursue collaborative projects and to develop their capacity. CAR does this by providing:

-
seed funding, post doctorate salaries and PhD top-up scholarships within one of our research themes
-
symposia, workshops and seminars
-
opportunities for researchers to collaborate
-
training to the next generation of researchers
-
translation of research findings to influence policy and practice in the real world.

The research projects that CAR members work on are based around three themes. These are the health impacts of:

A healthier community through cleaner air and cleaner energy sources

To work towards achieving our vision by:
-
generating new knowledge through innovative, multidisciplinary research
-
increasing research capacity
-
engaging with stakeholders to increase the impact of evidence on policy and practice
-
building national and international collaborative partnerships
We will:
-
promote multidisciplinary collaboration and partnerships in all our endeavours
-
support the development of emerging research leaders
-
conduct all our activities with integrity
-
conduct research that is of the highest scientific quality and policy relevance
-
promote equity in our research and policy activities
