Hazelwood Coal Mine Fire

In Victoria’s LaTrobe Valley, the Hazelwood open-cut coal mine has been on fire since February 9, resulting from a nearby grass fire (suspected to be the result of arson). A high volume of smoke from the fire is being released into the atmosphere, and the associated high levels of particulates and carbon monoxide constitute a health issue for locals in the area surrounding the mine, with greatest risk to those most vulnerable - including those with pre-existing heart or lung disease. With the fires expected to continue to burn for at least another week, prolonged exposure to smoke from the coal mine fire is a significant risk factor to all residents in the area. More details can be found in the piece by CAR investigators, Fay Johnston and Guy Marks about the health risks from the fires published in Croakey
